Buccaneer PalmGeneral information: The Buccaneer palm is a medium sized Florida palm with pinnate, arching, leathery, up to 13 feet long, dark-grey leaves and a thin, ringed, slightly swollen, grey-brown trunk. It is one of few palms native to the United States. It grows to a height of 18-20 feet.

Growth rate: These Florida palms have extremely slow growth rate.

Habitat: It is endemic to Florida, the northern Caribbean, south of Dominica, Quintana Roo in Mexico and Belize. The Florida palm is endangered in the U.S. (mainly because the seeds were overharvested in wild), but not threatened elsewhere.

Maintenance: These Florida palm trees prefer light shade and moist, well-drained locations. They love alkaline soils. They are pest-free, wind and salt tolerant. They are hardy to 26-28 F.

Uses: This Florida palm is rare in cultivation due to its extremely slow growth rate. Sometimes it is used in landscapes in the Florida keys, Cuba, the Bahamas, Honduras and Mexico. This Florida palm is a great specimen for coastal plantings.
