Coconut Palm Tree : Cocos Nucifera
General information: The Coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) is a symbol of tropical Florida. It is the most well known of all the Florida palms. The gorgeous Coconut palm tree produces real coconuts.
This graceful Florida palm has a slender, light grey trunk and a crown of lacy, pinnate fronds. There are two kinds of Coconut palms, the tall and the dwarf. The tall Coconut palm can reach a height of up to 60 feet.

Habitat: The origin of the Coconut palm is the subject of an ongoing debate. In the wild it occurs in the tropics in Central and South America, Africa and the Asian continent.
Maintenance: This Florida palm tree requires full sun, abundant water, well drained soil with sand mixed in and a large variety of nutrients. The popular Florida palm is not cold hardy, annual temperatures should be 70 F and higher. The Cocos nucifera is susceptible to lethal yellowing, Coconut leaf beetle and Coconut mite. It is also susceptible to Boron, Manganese, Magnesium and Potassium deficiencies.
Uses: This Florida palm tree is the most useful of all palm trees. Every part of the palm has some use. The tree can provide all the necessities of life. The Coconut palm’s oil is used to make cooking oil, cosmetics, soap and candles. The palm’s fronds and trunk are used in construction and crafts. The sap of the palm is used to make wine and vinegar. The husk is used to make ropes, clothing and household items.
These Florida palms are widely grown in the Sunshine state for decorative purposes.
