Senegal Date PalmGeneral information: The Senegal Date palm is a large, clustering Florida palm. It is a relative of the real Date palm tree. It grows in dense clumps to a height of 30-35 feet. This Florida palm has multiple, slender, leaning, rough, covered with brown fiber stems and pinnate, arching, stiff, 10-15 feet long, dark green leaves. Old leaves remain on this Florida palm and form petticoats. The petioles are covered with sharp spines.

Habitat: The Phoenix Reclinata is native to Southern Africa, Madagascar and the Comoro Islands. In the wild it occurs in swamps and river banks.

Maintenance: These multi-trunking Florida palms are easy to care for. They prefer full sun and regular watering. They are drought, wind, salt and frost tolerant. These clumping Florida palm trees are hardy to 28 F and can be grown in zones 9 to 11. For best look they can be trimmed, and some suckers can be removed.

Uses: This Florida palm tree is a commonly cultivated striking specimen in central and southern Florida. It is a great plant for large, public places such as a park, avenue, botanic gardens. It is too large for residential landscapes.
