Spindle Palm: Hyophorbe Verschaffeltii
General information: The Spindle palm is a distinctive and popular Florida palm with a cement, spindle shaped, predominantly ringed, swollen in the middle and thin at the top and the bottom, gray trunk and a crown of 8-10 pinnate, slightly recurving, waxy leaves. The Hyophorbe Verschaffeltii looks very similar to its cousin the Bottle palm but has different shape of the trunk and foliage. This Florida palm grows up to a height of 14-20 feet.

Habitat: The Spindle palm is native to the Mascarene Island. In the wild it is threatened by habitat destruction.There are only 50 species left in the wild.
Maintenance: These Florida palms require regular water and sunny locations. They are salt and wind tolerant. They are not hardy and can not take temperatures down to 32 F, these attractive plants can be damaged or killed. The Hyophorbe verschaffeltii can be grown in hardiness zones 10 to 11.
